If you are looking to buy a cat, you need to consider the many different cat breeds out there. Since there so many cat breeds, this can be a daunting task. Selecting the wrong breed may cause much distress to you and your family as the wrong breed may be a misfit. But selecting the right one can the missing spark you are looking for to light up your home.
So here’s 4 helpful pointers to get you going.
1. Vocal or quite cat?
Some cats can actually “meow” a lot and quite loudly too. If your home environment (and neighbors) can stand a vocal cat so go for it. If not, think twice. If you want loud, vocal cats, go for these breeds : Siamese Cat, the Korat, and the Burmese. On the quieter side, go for : The Scottish Fold, Somali, and the American Curl
2. Cuddly or aloof?
A cuddly cat needs more attention so if you have the time, by all means, go for this breed. The cuddly and affectionate cats are usually better with children than more
reserved breeds. But if you don’t have the time, then for the reserved or aloof breed instead. Some cuddly cat breeds are : the Snowshoe, Abyssinian, Maine Coon,
Ragdoll, Tonkinese, and the Himalayan Persian. More aloof and reserved breeds are the Norwegian Forest Cat, the Nebelung, and the Russian Shorthair.
3. Mischievous or self amusing?
There are some breeds like the Sphynx, Siamese, Rex, Balinese and British Angora that may cause some mischief. They are very inquisitive and energetic. Love them or hate them. If you like less volatile breads, then avoid these.
4. Long hair or short hair?
If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to your cat, you may want to opt for a short haired cat breed because it requires less time for grooming. An adult long haired cat . although nice looking, requires a lot of attention in grooming and can take up quite a lot of your time.
Having considered all of the different features and traits for the cat breeds you are interested in, you are now ready to start searching for your new pet. You will need to decide whether you want a kitten or if you would prefer to give an abandoned older cat a second chance.
If you are looking for a certain breed of kitten, check out your local cat show, since most exhibitors have a few kittens for sale. If an older cat is right for you, give your local humane society or animal rescue a call.
